5 Days in Cusco: Ancient Incas, Rainbow Mountains & One Seriously Good Adventure π΅πͺ
So you're thinking about Peru.
Excellent decision.
Now imagine waking up in Cusco, walking through streets once used by the Incas, standing beside stone walls that have survived centuries and then, a couple of days later, finding yourself surrounded by the surreal colors of the Peruvian Andes.
That's what we're going to fit into the next five days.
And don't worry β this isn't one of those itineraries where you need to wake up at 4 a.m. every single morning and return home needing another vacation.
We'll mix the big adventures with enough time to actually enjoy Cusco, eat something delicious and occasionally sit down.
Ready?
Let's go to Cusco. π¦

DAY 1 | Hello, Cusco! π
You've landed in one of the most fascinating cities in South America.
Naturally, your first instinct might be:
βRight. Where's the nearest mountain?β
Not so fast.
Cusco sits high in the Andes, and your body may need some time to understand why you've suddenly transported it several thousand meters above sea level.
Check into your hotel, drink some water, take things slowly and then head toward Plaza de Armas.
This is the heart of historic Cusco and the perfect place to get your first real feeling for the city.
Explore the surrounding streets, look for the famous Twelve-Angled Stone and slowly wander toward San Blas.
You'll find small shops, cafΓ©s, artisan workshops and charming streets.
You'll also find hills.
Cusco has apparently never met a staircase it didn't like.
Keep Day 1 easy. Eat well, explore slowly and give yourself time to adjust.
Rainbow Mountain has been waiting for millions of years. It can wait another 48 hours.
π Still Have Some Energy?
Spend your first evening discovering how the Incas understood the stars at the Cusco Planetarium.
See the Cusco Planetarium ExperienceDAY 2 | Meet the Incas ποΈ
Yesterday was about settling in.
Today we're going several centuries back in time.
Cusco was the heart of the Inca Empire, and some extraordinary archaeological sites are located in and around the city.
For a first visit, joining a guided Cusco City & Inca Ruins Tour is an easy way to understand what you're actually looking at.
Because there's a big difference between:
βThat's an impressive wall.β
and:
βWait... they built THAT without modern machinery?β

Today your alarm clock may become your least favorite travel companion.
But trust us β this one is worth getting out of bed for.
Deep in the Andes lies one of Peru's most recognizable landscapes: Rainbow Mountain.
The naturally colored mountain layers, enormous valleys and dramatic high-altitude scenery make this one of those places where your camera roll gets completely out of control.
Add Red Valley to the experience and you've got one seriously photogenic day in the Andes.
Rainbow Mountain is beautiful.
It is also very high.
This is not the moment to discover that the last serious exercise you did was running through an airport.
Take the altitude seriously, dress in layers, bring sun protection, wear suitable walking shoes and check current conditions before going.

Today we're giving you two options.
Because it's your vacation.
You should occasionally be allowed to make decisions.
OPTION A | Waqrapukara
If dramatic archaeology surrounded by huge Andean landscapes sounds like your kind of adventure, consider Waqrapukara.
It's particularly appealing for travelers who enjoy history, photography and getting away from Cusco's busiest attractions.
Explore WaqrapukaraOPTION B | Palcoyo
If you're still thinking:
βI haven't seen enough colorful mountains yet...β
Meet Palcoyo.
This is another opportunity to experience the unusual landscapes and geology of the high Andes.
Explore PalcoyoDAY 5 | One Last Coffee in Cusco β
No heroic 5 a.m. wake-up today.
Your final morning should be simple.
Have breakfast near Plaza de Armas, wander through the historic center, visit San Pedro Market, pick up those souvenirs you definitely said you weren't going to buy and enjoy Cusco one last time.
Then collect your luggage and head toward your next destination.
Don't be surprised if you're already wondering when you can come back.
π¨ Where Should You Stay in Cusco?
For a five-day trip, location matters more than you might think.
Staying close to the historic center means less time sitting in traffic and more time eating, exploring and enjoying Cusco β which seems like a pretty good trade.
You can compare hotels throughout Cusco here and check current prices for your actual travel dates:

Here's the good news: you don't need to book a tour for everything.
Cusco is a fantastic city to explore independently. Walk around Plaza de Armas, wander through San Blas, visit cafΓ©s and discover the historic streets at your own pace.
Tours become especially useful when you're heading outside the city, where transportation, timing and logistics can become more complicated.
And there are far more experiences available than the ones included in our five-day itinerary.
